The first encounter with a silverback is something I'll remember for the rest of my life. He looks you straight in the eyes — deep enough that it feels like he's looking at something further back than that — while the adrenaline runs. It should feel dangerous, and for a moment it does, but underneath that there's a strange kind of calm.
Gorillas aren't the only ones — the chimpanzees are the same. You notice it immediately: the way they look at you, move, and interact with each other is closer to human behavior than you'd expect.
The trip led from the rainforest of Nyungwe, with its chimpanzees and monkeys high in the canopy, north to the volcanoes, where the gorillas and golden monkeys live in the bamboo and on the misty slopes.
