The first encounter with a silverback is something I'll remember for the rest of my life. He looks you straight in the eyes — deep enough that it feels like he's looking at something further back than that — while the adrenaline runs. It should feel dangerous, and for a moment it does, but underneath that there's a strange kind of calm.

Gorillas aren't the only ones — the chimpanzees are the same. You notice it immediately: the way they look at you, move, and interact with each other is closer to human behavior than you'd expect.
